I have rebuilt an old Herreshoff Steel Sailboat and restored a beautiful Wooden Sailboat , and lived on board a grand 110 year old steel Dutch Barge in Europe and would I have any of them again? In spite of the great times on all of them and memorable voyages the answer is an emphatic and absolute No! For three simple reasons, maintenance , maintenance and maintenance, and repair , repair and repair.
Of course there is something satisfying in restoring an old boat and having everyone comment on how nice she looks and so on, but the reality is that it takes a lot of time and effort that would have been better off sailing somewhere. The first thing you absolutely have to do on any older sailing boat is perform a very rigorous Yacht Survey preferably before you buy it! On important lesson is that there will always be more work than you anticipated and it will always cost more than you budgeted for. Like many I opted where possible to use used parts and many times I ended up at West Marine for new materials and bits and various sailboat accessories and sailboat supplies and spare parts
Looking after an old boat or a steel or wooden boat takes a lot of varnish also a lot of paint and also a lot of parts and supplies
Once you get the boat looking as it should then it is still an endless regime of varnishing and of course painting
I chose on all my boats to get sailboat-covers made for everything, in particular teak doors and so on, as it sure pays off with time and materials. One important step towards keeping the yacht nice for the sailing season is proper winterizing of your sailboat
