I am a certified and practising marine electrical and electronics engineer as well as a marine surveyor. I am also a yachtsman just like you and I have constructed and cruised lots of sailboats. I have performed sailing sailboat service work on a lot of other cruising yachts lived aboard a number of cruising sailing yachts for a decade or more. You learn a lot about what works and what fails. I extend practical advice based on experience and reality. Like many I choose to execute my own cruising yacht repair work as experts can charge some horrific hourly rates.

It is a truth that the majority of all cruising yacht electrical and electronics failures are directly caused by wrong wiring and bad wire connections. These same problems are also a major cause of fires on yachts. Just because the average yacht has only a 12 volt electrical system, this will not prevent life-threatening problems or fires. One improperly rated and installed wire and an equally substandard connection could potentially destruct you cruising yacht.
